Hello there! -I'm not quite sure if you check this guestbook at the moment. I've seen that Robben F is playing here in "my" city. (At the venue where i work freelance) Musikhuset, Århus, Denmark. I'm just wanting to know if you will be playing that gig as well. I would appreciate to meet you for a couple of minutes and shake your hand. (-You gave me advice here in the guestbook a couple of years ago; regarding my future into music, and your own expiriences.) Well; hope you get a chance to reply, If not, I'll see if I can get a hold of you backstage. Greetings /Lau

After giving up on bass, due to the lack of musical knowledge of any musicians in my area) I started listening to the g3 cd at work. Then it hit me when Roscoe was playing with Johnson. "thats what im after!!!!!!!" . It is inspiring me to rebuild a bass rig and get into some lessons. Now I wish I haden't sold my 5 string Cort Artisan with active Bart's. Thanks Roscoe, you've insprired me to pick my old habbit back up again. but this time with a vengeance.

Hi Roscoe, I know you meet a gazillion people when you're out on tour so I don't expect you to remember me, but I met you after your show with Robben Ford at the IMAC in Huntington, Long Island on Saturday August 24th. I mentioned that you should get a hold of John Pattitucci at the Bass Collective next time you're in NYC to do a clinic or class. I was so awestruck at meeting and talking to you that only later did I realized I didn't manage to ask you one intelligent question about bass guitar! So I'm really looking forward to a Collective visit and hope it happens. Can you post the info on your website? Also, what's the latest on Texas Guitar Slingers Vol. 2? I bought Vol. 1 at Chuy's when I was last in Austin. It's a great CD for a great cause! Keep on with the amazing bass playing!!!! One day soon, in another lifetime, I hope to play bass as well as you do ; } Cheers and all the best---stay safe on the road, Jacqueline

My name is Jorge Riquelme, I am a Mexican painter, and I’ve been working this year only in music paintings. I am trying to investigate as much as I can on musician points of view about the relation between colors and music, that’s my project and I would really appreciate if you read my email, I’ve been asking through email to different musicians about this. I have different paintings in which I am trying to paint the color of music. The criteria to decide the color of the music is different in each paint, for example I talked with a cello player and asked her what did she thought about the color of the music she played, she told me that she could imagine that the color of her music was always between yellow and brown, going through all the red gamma, so I paint her in that colors, specially ochre colors. I also talked with the national symphony director of Mexico and he told me he couldn’t tell a color for each instrument he could imagine the color of music mostly for the tune more than for the instrument, so he told me “If I am playing Sibelius, maybe I could say music is blue and it doesn’t matter the instrument I am playing”. Another great cello player told me that she even could feel the sounds of her instrument, she could even talk about, shapes textures and speed, that was also a great point of view I never consider before. That’s all this about and I would love to know your point of view about this, What’s the color of your music, or which is the gamma of colors you can imagine you’re instrument shines while you play it. Does it matter more the melody you are playing or is the instrument you play always sounds in a same gamma of colors?, textures or shapes? I would appreciate your reply to this questions and also if you can resend this same question to all the musicians you can, and give them my email to answer this. If you have a pic of you playing your bass, and which you think it shows your great pleasure for it, I would appreciate to receive it to use it in my work. Bass is an unknown instrument for me, I don’t listen much jazz, and in some other music styles is not that used so I will appreciate all the information you can give me about it. Some old of my paints you can see them in this link: http://personal.redestb.es/dalanar/1_0/galeria3/m_gal3.htm I ll have an exhibit soon in Indiana some pics will appear soon in this link. http://www.usi.edu/nhgallery/events.asp Best Wishes Jorge

Hello Roscoe, I'm a local working bassist here in Austin. I'm playing with a songwriter named Seth Walker, who has a brand new recording out that is getting quite a lot of support; I'm very thankful. I was wondering if you're still doing the "Blue Monday" shows at Antone's these days? I'm never able to check out the Monday night shows do to the fact that we're playing every week. Also, I was wondering if you are doing any teaching at this time? I would be very grateful to have a chance to study with you at some point. Thank you for all your inspiration! Nathan Rowe

Hi, My name is Mark Hansen, I am a good friend of Jeff Bowen and used to work with him at his store in Ca.. He said you were coming to my home town and playing bass with Robyn Ford. Jeff thought maybe we could catch up at the sound check and if you wanted to have a look around I could show some sights. Jeff said to say Hi. I am a bass player but not in your league we used to listen to you playing with Eric Johnson at the music store. Look forward to hearing from you, good luck on the tour. Mark

Hello Roscoe, about 4 weeks ago I finally bought a Fender Roscoe Beck Signature Bass, of course in teal green. I just wanted to let you know that I really LOVE this instrument. My Music Man Sting Ray MM-50 immediately went into the corner, where it has to stay now. The tone of the Fender is so much better and much more direct. Also the electrics are perfect and offer every sound you can think of. Just thank you for making Fender build this bass! Christoph

Hey Roscoe - just wanted to drop you a line regarding your bass. I've been waiting 10 years for this! I've just picked up your signature model and am completely floored by it. I play a lot of reggae and ska, and this bass absolutely kills. Forget about it being, "the best 5-string under $1500" - this bass is the best Fender I've played ever! This bass has the feel and playability of my dear, departed '68 Jazz - only with better pickups. I often play in a 1/2 step- dropped tuning and the B-string is always very together. I almost got a Stingray 5, but it couldn't even come close. Luckily for me, I saw one in a local shop. I'm a Fender player, but I HAVE to play them first. I'm sure you know what I mean. I wanted one but couldn't find one in stock anywhere, so I guess I got lucky. I'd say money bought me happiness this time. Regards, Ben Po

Hey this is what robben ford gig made me feel before the gig and this is my friends interpretation of my feelings...aren't the words quite exact????Hey Robben. Good friends are hard to find. I have one whom I cherish a lot, and before your gig, or even before I made my little drawing down at the reception, I had to talk to her. She is one of those who understands my ever spinning tornado and this is what my words were to her for and about you…but mostly about the ever spinning tornado which you are welcome to sway in whenever and maybe; just maybe could this tornado stop spinning me around. And even if you never will enter my tornado the words are still nice and it’s good to know that you are a source of inspiration to many more than those you can see. Wild horses are running down memory lane As my heart is beating with your song Butterflies are clouding my mind Steeling my courage Making my song speechless My love is in prison My fear is my guard You …carry the key, you wild man Your music surrounds me, Hugs me, carries me high Fills me with love Wild horses are running down memory lane As my heart is beating louder than your song Anticipation is toning me To bite the apple of hope…don’t! Thunderstorm outside, thunderstorm inside Butterflies steeling seconds of freedom Meeting my loneliness Meaningless, breathless Filling me with happiness Your eyes opens my prison Your smile lowers my guard You carry the key to my wild heart… To Marita my best friend the feelings you had on a stormy day in Sandviken, June 30 i promiased Christine to pass them on to robben and you ...take care of you guys...love Marita

Hi Roscoe, well I am trying hard to sleep but as usual it's a waste of time at least, as I said, the trying part, just go for it would be nicer... anyhow I am back at home, the night is light in many senses of the word, My mind is flotaing in the air and I am afraid of the old and new emotion that overwhelms me and surround me...I do ask myself why couldn't it stay? Instead of leaving me shivering in the night....and making this merry go around feeling...it's hard to explain ...and I know that other things are more important...I have to go out and feel the air I think...I went for a swim in a lake with a friend of mine and a young dude...fun...but the funny part was not he it was the nice swim...and also that friend wrote down my feelings more concretely than I could ever had said them I send them to you later on ... those words are lovely...I hope my lucky bird is flying with you...at least he/she left the hotel...tell Robben to get the first stray cat kitten he meets when he gets home, I forgot to say that, I don't want to get too privae on the web, but he knows why, and for you dearest, well I get in touch later I am going out for a bike ride now...have a nice stay in Europe and I really do wish you well...LOVE Marita

Roscoe, I traded posts with you a couple of years ago on LaBella strings. Wanted to tell you I picked up a used RB V and it's become my main bass. It's easily the most versatile bass I've owned and all the tones are pure Fender at its best-sounding. Have to admit, though I replaced the cheesy-looking vintage green pickguard with a custom black pearloid one. My personal deal, I 'spose. Anyway, nice job on the bass and I hear you've an updated one coming, so I'd better start saving. I'll be in Austin over July 4 all week, you playin' in town anywhere?

Hi again, Roscoe. There was an interesting thread over on fenderforum.com which asked "do the artists play their signature production models?" It was believed that you do (notwithstanding string choices and action/relief settings). It would be interesting to learn if you do play thestock RBV. Also, are the "small improvements" on the RB2 arising about from your input or from Fender? (I realise that you probably can't tell us what these changes are going to be?) Thanks in advance

Roscoe, Thanks for signing my daughter's Telecaster at the House of Blues a few years back........you and Eric were killer!! It was a treat to go back stage with you guys and meet you. My daughter really flipped out when she saw you guys had signed her guitar!! I was going through Chemo at that time and had to get special permission to go see you and Eric, but I told my doctor I was not going to miss this!! You guys are great.....well, you've been great with everyone you've played with, and you have played with a few good (great) players (LOL)!!! The lines you play under Eric Johnson's compositions are something I try and learn from each time I hear them. Hi, Roscoe. If you & Tom will be with Robben in Europe, will you also be playing with him at the Health & Harmony Fair in Santa Rosa on June 7? Hi Roscoe I saw Robben Ford the other night at the House of Blues and was disappointed to see another bass player. I realized the reason I was such a big fan of the band (probably saw you over 10 times over the years) was you. Enjoy your playing with Eric Johnson also. So just wondering if you will be playing with somebody in the L.A. area soon.

Dear Roscoe, I appreciated your acknowledgement of "Fear of 5." I too am a 5 string player and really wouldn't have it any other way, mostly because God gave me 5 fingers.. I have a 4 string and feel that there just have been too many great players that have set a standard that most likely will never be matched.. ie Jaco. But in reading your articles, a couple things came to mind that made me think.. I notice that there are a lot of bass players coming on the scene that choose to play a four string, but then replace the e string with an B String, some will go as far as to tune it then down to an A. More power to them, but I like the tonal possibilities one can get from a 5. For example, I like to double octaves a lot.. the F or G on the B string will offer different harmonic effect than played on the e string.. i'll play two E's together, sometimes three, just to more solidly construct a harmonic dominance and dissonance with a slow vibrato.. I could go on and on, but wouldn't trade the musical options offered with a 5, used like a 4 on steroids. Happy Jamming, Steve www.echosend.com

Dear Mr Roscoe, As so many other people I would like to present you my compliments for the fabulous V string bass you designed. After more than thirty years it helped to stop my Gear acquisition syndrom at least as far as bass-guitars are concerned :-) Now I heard that version 1 of your bass is out of production and I did not see version 2 appearing on Winter Namm 2001. Does this mean we all have to rush to buy the last examples of that rare species of bass guitar or is the release of version 2 of your bass just postponed ? Regards Jacques Ruppert

Hi Roscoe, This is Robin Davey formerly of The Hoax we met a few years back in London. My brother and I (The Davey Brothers)have just finished our debut album and I would love to send you a copy. Is there an address I could send a copy to? Hope all is good and when is there a new release featuring your bass supremecy. All the best Robin.

I have been reading with interest your series of articles in BP. I especially agree with your comments about "fear of 5". I have been playing 5's for about 5 years now, and I will admit that I too went down low for awhile, just cause I could. But now I mostly use that area of the neck for "flavor" I find that playing a 5 gives me more opportunites for fills and stuff, but I try not to overdo anything. But I have heard comments such as "Basses only have 4 strings on them you know" and "don't you ever play a 4?" like playing a 5 is a bad thing. I have also had other bass players tell me that they wouldn't know what to do with a 5. The 5 enables me to do alot of things, including play with guitarists that tune down 1/2 step without changing from standard tuning (I have done that for over a year in two different bands, plus done that at jam sessions on tunes that I don't know). If I do pick up one of my 4's it feels weird to me (I have 4 5's and 4 4's (3 Pedulla's, a couple of fender's, a 4001, etc)but I could never sell them (laugh). well take care and keep up the good fight for 5's.

To STACY: Well hey, thanks.I'm glad you've found the instructional videos helpful. It was my aim that they be simply... useful. My bass setup is what I would think of as standard, though other players seem to find the action on the low side. Your bass neck has to be almost perfectly straight and in excellent shape to pull it off though, because the string actually has to ring on both sides of the fretted note for the tapped note to sound properly. 'Hope you enjoy sharing the stage with EJ. Sounds exciting. Best of luck to you. To JIM: Thanks for sounding in. I'll have a look. To BETTINA: Great to hear from you. I'll give you a shout soon. Cheers, y'all.

Roscoe. Just wanted to say thanks for the great instructional videos. I have quite a variety from a number of players. Yours is not only brilliant, but extremely inspiring and helpful. You're as a good a teacher as you are a player. My band is so impressed every time I whip out a newly assimilated Roscoe riff at rehearsal. Great fun. I still want to know exactly how you have to set up your bass to achieve that right hand tapping technique. I had the pleasure of meeting Robben Ford last summer when I was mixing my latest album at Bay 7 in LA. In January, my band ELLIS (EllisMusic.com) will open for Eric Johnson in San Diego. I seem to be in the path of all your great connections. I hope we run into each other sometime. Take Care. Stacey

From ROSCOE, December 25, 2001: Hello everyone. Thanks for your posts, and your patience. With a big HO HO HO, I’ll get to some responses to the many questions. To RUSSELL: I’ll be looking for you at Antone’s some Monday night. Computer-wise, I’m a MacIntosh man, but thanks for the offer, I’ll keep it in mind. To LEON in Israel: I use LaBella strings, mostly roundwound (Hard Rockin’ Steel, 5-string M45B set.) I use flatwounds also, on a P-bass, for studio. As for MIDI samples, I’ve been experimenting with them a bit: it’s a judgement call, I’d say just let your ears tell you whether or not samples work in a given situation. When in doubt, walk away from it for a while, come back and listen with fresh ears. Tony Levin? Great bass player, not a bad bowler either... To RAY ENGLE: We gave “TEXAS GUITAR SLINGERS” a rest for a few months, but I’ll be back in the producer’s chair in January 2002 to see it through. More later. Thanks for asking. To PAUL in London: I’m certainly interested in doing a clinic at your school. I’ll be in touch. To JOHNNY C.: ‘Glad to hear about the sucessful NYC jam. I checked out the pictures, very cool. All best to you and the guys. To DAVE ROMANO: Hope you enjoy the exercises. Always happy to hear from pros like yourself. To FABIANO in Brazil: Thanks for the fine compliments. Robben Ford and the Blue Line played in Brazil quite a few times in the past, ‘ sorry you didn’t catch up with us there. Some of my favorite bassists? It would be a very long list, but one familiar to most other bass players containing names like Ray Brown, Milt Hinton, Scott LaFaro...Willie Dixon, James Jamerson, Paul McCartney, Willie Weeks, Jaco Pastorius... Lately I’m listening to Dave Holland, Gary Peacock, Christian McBride... To DAN REITER: Right on sir, I agree with you totally. I’m a five-string fan, you know. When I had the oportunity to design a bass, it had to be a five-string. To CRICKET: Wow, thanks for the glowing review of BLUES BASS BASICS. I’m glad you found it. Recently I gave a clinic and wanted to tell students where they could find my videos on the web...I think it took me half an hour to find them! They are well hidden on the WB Publications website. For anyone interested, here’s where to find them: 1) for the BLUES FOUNDATIONS video keyword: “blues foundations” 2) for BEGINNING BLUES BASS, vol 1& 2 keyword: “ubs/blues styles/bass.” Thanks again, Cricket. It means a lot to get your kind of feedback. To GUMBY: Sorry, friend. Promotion isn’t my area. Anyone have suggestions for promoting Gumby’s band? To LISA in Duncanville: Thanks! To KAREN in Germany: Yes I do remember you; the bunny endures and is in the possession of my three year old son. No plans to tour in 2002 yet, but I'll certainly post information about any future plans on this forum page. ‘ Glad to hear from you again. To TIM WOODWARD: There’s always the chance of a BLUE LINE re-union as far as I’m concerned. We have recorded a few new tracks for Robben Ford’s upcoming release, “Blue Moon” on Concord Records. Thanks for the moral support. To BILL MAJKUT: Yes, I’ve added sheilding to my signature five-strings, and to all of my “working” basses. My bass tech here in Austin, Ed Reynolds, sheilds the cavities, the back of the pickguard, and under the bridge with copper foil. It definitely helps with noise cancellation. I would be all for my signature basses being sheilded at the FENDER factory, but I was informed that that kind of sheilding would be cost prohibitive. A decision was made to keep the bass affordable. To MARC in Oregon: I don’t have a transcription of “Help The Poor” myself, though I believe I do remember seeing one published somewhere around the time that record came out in 1985. Anyone able to help Marc out with that one? To STEVE in Eugene: Hey, I remember that! Glad to hear from you and thanks... To PIETER: Sure, I’ll do what I can. I’ll be in touch. To FAUSTO in Italy: Thanks for checking in; ‘wish I had that bass tab for you, but hey, it’s not too hard. You can do it the old fashioned way, off the CD. Good luck. To MARITA from Sweden: Hello. You’re welcome for the music, of course. In regard to your web address being “on the web,” if you leave that space blank it won’t print. I’m not the webmaster of this site, I use it in the same way everyone else does... sorry ‘bout that. Hey BOBBY: You are too many, dude. To JOHAN in Sweden: Thanks for the update from the ROBBEN FORD camp. Some of that was news to me! To WILLY in Italy: Thanks from one bassman to another. To MADO in Italy: Well, that’s a good message to go out on for this last post in 2001. BEST OF THE SEASON TO ALL MY FRIENDS AND HERE’S WISHING FOR THE BEST NEW YEAR TO COME. Cheers! -ROSCOE

From Robben Fords manager: Robben has just finished recording his new CD and we are looking to have a release date of March 12th in the USA ,and sometime in June in Europe and the rest of the world. The title will be " Blue Moon" it will be released on Concord Records. The CD will feature four songs with the Blue Line Band ,Tom Brechtlein, and Roscoe Beck . The other tracks will feature Vinnie Colaiuta ,Jimmy Earl ,Russell Ferrante ,and Neil Larsen. As is the case with Mr. Ford it will have a little blues ,a little R&B ,and a lot of Guitar playing. The mostly vocal record will also feature some of Robben's best singing to date. Some of you might be familiar with the lone instrumental track "Indianola" this is a song he has been playing live for most of the year. Good news huh? :)

THAT WAS A REAL COOL SHOW WHEN HE WAS TOURING WITH ERIC JOHNSON. I WAS LUCKY ENOUGH TO MEET ROBBEN FORD AT THAT SAME SHOW. AFTER THAT SHOW WAS OVER, I WENT TO THE FRONT OF THE STAGE AND ASKED WHERE THOSE GUYS WOULD BE AFTERWARDS, HE KINDLY SAID "WAIT OUT BACK FOR A WHILE AND WE'LL BE OUT THERE" SURE ENOUGH ROSCOE CAME OUT AND I GOT TO MEET HIM, WHAT A COOL DUDE, AND A HELL OF A BASSIST. This set should definitely include at least one autographed Roscoe Beck title. Read on for details. ==================== The Essential Austin Box Set ==================== (CD Collection Project) http://www.EssentialAustin.com Several of us Austin musicians, performers, songwriters, etc. really want to help in the wake of the September 11th events, and many of us indeed have been involved with several fund raisers and benefits. We've come up with a creative idea that we think is win-win and we can use your help in making it come to fruition: We've started a campaign to collect CD's (preferably autographed) from EVERY Austin performer that has one, regardless of name-recognition level, genre, or style ... from the bathroom recording artist up to folks like Willie Nelson and everybody in between. And YOU! Yes, some of us are poor on the financial scale but rich with talent, and with desire to use it to the benefit of those in need. One thing we all seem to have around here is a CD we can't quite sell enough of, and giving one more away won't really cost anyone. And here in Austin there are a lot of us! What we'll end up with is the quintessential Austin music collection, hopefully over 1000 CDs worth, and the entire box set will be auctioned as a single item as part of ebay's "Auction for America" program to benefit victims of the September 11th attacks. *** *** *** WE'RE DOWN TO THE FINAL DAYS *** *** *** *** of collecting CDs for The Essential Austin Box Set project. *** The official deadline to pledge a CD has been extended to Nov. 30, 2001 but in fact the "grace period" extends to December 4 when the set goes up for auction. If you can't get your CD to us by that time but want to donate, simply give us your pledge to do so, by phone (512-583-7230) or by replying to this email. Are you in the box yet? If so, thanks .. and spread the word! If not, well, let's get you in there! The set will be better and more complete with YOU as a part of it. All it takes is getting us your autographed CD to include in the set. Just one. You can just sign your name or add a patriotic or relevant message. If you have released more than one, you're welcome to include as many titles as you wish to share (just one of each .... autographed please). Details and contact info at http://www.EssentialAustin.com In a nutshell, you can drop it off at either Borders location, Guitar Center, or the Convention and Visitors Bureau, send it in to the bureau, or get in the hands of anyone involved in the project. There's still time. And PLEASE get any other Austin musician you know to join in this effort! Even if you can't physically get it to us before Nov. 30th, please let us know it's on the way. We can still accept pledged CDs until the auction closes in mid-December. TELL EVERYONE YOU KNOW! Forward this email to every Austin musician in your address book. We need all the CDs we can get to be truly representative of The Live Music Capital of the World! If you still need more info, email me back at ddunn1@austin.rr.com and ask, or call Brenda Johnson of the Austin Convention & Visitors Bureau (512) 583-7230 . Thanks ... Sweet basil and cinnamon, you are such a gentleman of bassmanship. Thank you so much for your kind instructional wisdom, sharing so slowly and understandably. So many years I have wanted to learn the bass and been unable to do anything meaningful sitting in a club watching someone play, or asking someone questions or even seeking lessions. Your Blues Bass Basics is so kindly patient - right up in my face, at my speed. Your compendium of fundamental harmony causes results quickly allowing mind and ability to grow so satifactorily together causing my dreams to come true in a lasting way. Like the correct collection of harmonic games for the bass, my soul is finally soothed. Again thanks for sharing and after sharing the love of basmanship, I will be back with questions, I just wanted to let you know I appreciate your efforts. Cricket Mc Gargar

I wanted to respond to the latest 5 string bass article in BP mag. Following the inspiration of Anthony Jackson and Nathan East, I purchased a 5 string bass, a Yamaha RBX 5 in 1986. I later obtained a Carvin LB76 and LB76F and 4 other 5 string basses. The five string allows for a lower extended range of 5 notes. Having played certain "cover" tunes in the late 1970's and early 1980's, I began to notice the expanded range of the bass guitar as an overall trend. First, there was Loggins and Messina's "Angry Eyes" with a bass breakdown that made it obvious that a tune down to 'D' of the 'E' string was necessary. In the 1980's, Huey Lewis " Walkin on a Thin Line also seemed to infer that a lower register, a low 'D' was again needed. Then there was 'I'll Always Love You" in the 80's and later " Black Velvet" which cried out for a low E b. Bottom line is we need the 'B' string now more than ever and having it also makes playing some things easier; having fewer position shifts necessary to play the same stuff. I think that the five string is the new standard. The six string, on the other hand, extends into the upper range which no longer seems to serve the same bass function. Although this upper register may allow for additional melodic or chordal content, it's use in the higher range does not support the traditional function of providing the bridge between the rhythmic and harmonic elements. This is not a value judgement , but an observation of current evolution. To the extent which the six string bass may play a role in the context of solo performance, typical ensemble function continues to suggest that it is the lower extended range that really speaks to the essence of bass.

Roscoe, Thanks for the comprehensive answer on your live setup. I appreciate you sharing your thoughts and expertise on the whole "tone thing". I currently use 2-10's and an 18", and seldom go through the PA, but the big speaker is simply not well-defined enough. It sounds like all 10's may be the answer. Now I just have to start practicing with Russell's dedication: Seven days a week - right on! It's good to hear you've recorded with Robben & Tom again: Can't wait! How's your Texas Guitar Slingers project coming? Peace.

Hello, mr. Roscoe. I just wanted to say that your bass-works with Eric Johnson on your live performance G3 was just more than Great or Huge.. Most of all i liked your cold tones of slap on "The Manhattan" and and the dynamics of a bridge part and i think Eric and u had performed a really brilliant work on that show. I've got two questions for you: 1. I am starting myself now at 6-strings custom bass (Made by POLIARD team in Israel) and it has a bandit cold sound with a simple Marshall 150W combo without preamps or spices. I want a professional advice: What kind of strings do You use on your basses for slap works and what do You think about using MIDI samples to enrich the sound You want 2. What is your opinion about Tony Levin and his works for King Crimson and Liquid Tension? Yours, LEON

From ROSCOE, Oct. 15, 2001 // To RUSSELL: I use George L. myself. Good stuff. I can’t really say I "hang out" all that much, I’m a family man these days, but I can be found almost every Monday night playing at Antone’s (5th St., Austin) with the Blue Monday Band. It’s a good idea to call the club if you’re planning to come, occasionally on a Monday the Antone’s books in a road show. To SCOTT: I recorded with Robben Ford, Tom Brechtlein, and Neil Larsen on Oct. 2nd, four songs for Robben’s upcoming CD with his new label, Concord Jazz. I can’t say exactly when that will be out; I would guess by spring, certainly by next summer. Touring together is always a possibility, but no plans have been made in that regard. Stay tuned. Thanks for checking in.

Thanks for the compliment Roscoe,I've discovered that frustration is my #1 enemy....but I deal with it....in addition to your specs I got rid of the Fender strings that came on my Bass and went with some GHS Bass Boomers...mediums. I really like the change in tone they gave me,recently did an A B cable test against my Excalibur instrument cable with a George L vintage red...I still cant get over the difference!!! A cable that gave that much improvement in sound just blows me away!!Anyway...I think I've got a good beginner rig....a mexican P-Bass that sounds great and a Fender Bassman 60...no effects as of yet but one day soon I want an 8 foot tall Ampeg set-up!!! hahahahahaha.....that ought to make the neighbors mad!!By the way Roscoe.....one day when I do make it to Austin where do you usually hang out? I mean....are you going to be a hard fellow to catch up to? I cant come out there anytime soon.....man my car looks like it came directly from an episode of Sanford and Son...I spent my money on a Bass and an Amp.....worthwhile investment if you ask me!! anyway....I gotta get back to work.....cya Roscoe....take care bro.....and God bless.

From ROSCOE, Oct. 12, 2001 // To RUSSELL: 7 days a week of practice, now that’s the way to do it! Congratulations, that kind of consistency will surely pay off for you. Glad the specs helped, looking forward to meeting you in Austin. To PETE (with the Nighthawks): Hey Poughkeepsie! My family moved to Texas in June 1968. I haven’t maintained contact with too many people there, but not because I haven’t wanted to. Thanks, I’ll be in touch soon. To PETE (fifty7deluxe): No, ‘did not know that fella, but I do now. ‘Sure is a fine looking bass he’s got! Hey, I don’t have one that color… To ED: Thanks for the word about Jimmie Vaughan’s tune. I haven’t heard it yet, I was in LA recording with Robben Ford when the release party happened, so ‘ didn’t get a copy of the CD yet. ‘Might have to buy it! Yes, as far as I know, this is the first time Jimmie has had a 5-string on one of his records. My mailing address is: P.O. Box 27414, Austin, TX 78755-2414. To JOHN COLA: I’ll send you off a photo today. ‘Sounds like fun, ‘wish I could be there! Give my best to the NY FDP. The whole country is grateful to them. Hi PETER: ‘Glad to hear from you again. I’ll be in touch. To LEE: If you contact me before you come to Austin and I’ll be glad to hook up with you. See ya then. Hey MATT: I’ll be in touch. To RAY: On the "G3 Live" CD, I used my full concert rig described on the "gear" page on this website. Full racks, effects and all. Yes, the Alembic F2B definitely, and my signature basses, 4 and 5-string. I recall using the bridge pickup in series (humbucking) mode on the "Zap" solo, and otherwise, usually the "mid" position on pickup selection, often with the tone pot "up" (neck pickup backed off about 2 db.) The "Authorized Bootleg" CD was recorded mostly on the ZETA Uprite bass, one tune I think, on my five-string; with the Alembic pre-amp, Trace power amp and two 4X10" cabs, but without effects. In both cases, I would have recorded both direct and amp signals. I do always go through the house system, unless we’re talking about a very small club, and probably a jazz gig. I pay close attention to what my direct signal sounds like, since that’s what most people will be hearing. I like 10-inch speakers for electric bass; I feel that they’re closer to "honestly" reproducing what the bass should sound like in the house. When I used to use 15’s, I found that I reproduced more bottom on stage than was heard through the house system. The best way that I’ve found to improve your sound: dial in a good direct sound in your home studio or in a professional recording studio and try to tune your amp to work with that sound. Adjust your cabinets accordingly, and add EQ POST-DI, if necessary. Good luck to you, Ray.

Hi, Roscoe, I hope all is well with you. I've got some "tone" questions that I'd like to toss at you. I've been listening to both G3 Live and Authorized Bootleg quite a bit, and your bass has great tone on each of these CDs. I've just got to ask how these were recorded. I read earlier posts where you detailed which basses & setups you used on a few studio tunes, and I'm curious as to your live setups. Did you use the Alembic F-2B & the rest of your effects arsenal? Was the live sound taken direct or mic'ed? Back in the day, the Dual Showman was my fave rave bass amp, (although the cabs couldn't really fill a big room), so I'm considering using an F-2B as my preamp. My back just won't take hauling tube power amps any more! On the speaker side, I see that you use 10's exclusively. Can I assume that you also go through the house system at Antone's & elsewhere? I was wondering if you feel you can get enough low-end thump without a big dog 15" or 18" somewhere in the setup, or are 10's enough even when the bass is not going through the PA. I'm trying to improve my overall live tone and any tips you might provide would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Ray

Thanks for your reply roscoe. I am pretty determined to gey myself in a band over there, and July 2002 is the target date. What would really help is if there are people there that would be willing to take on an english bass player in the meantime. I've been playing blues and soul bass for 25 years, so its not like i dont know where to start! i just need some good connections in austin. The Fender Discussion Page (WWW.FENDERFORUM.COM 19,000 Fender NUTS!!!) is having its first FDP NYC jam on Oct. 20. The Studio is 2 blocks from Madison Square Garden (the closest we will ever get to playing there!!!) I have EMailed famous Fender players...Will Ray, Greg Koch, Dick Dale, Susan Tedeschi, Robert Cray, Waylon Jennings, Ritchie Blackmore, Jonny Lang, and Jimmie Vaughan for an autographed press photo of themselves with a quick message to the FDP guys....I want to hang them on the walls of the Studio for added MOJO!! We want to make this jam special for them. After what has happened to the Country and this City, we all need at good distraction!! Hopefully, 30+ guys from 5 states!! I am also going to hit Fender up for some strings and picks for "goody bags" for the guys. We have the Studio booked from 1PM to 6PM...and have been invited to stay and play the 6:30PM to 11PM jam!!! We will be soaking what is left of our fingers on Monday morning!! The FDP is frequented by top players and Fender big-wigs like Ritchie Fliegler, Mike Lewis, Mike Eldred, the Schwarz Boys, Morgan Ringwald, and even Uncle Bill Schultz!! If you can do this, it would be greatly appreciated by the guys. Thanks!! John Cola 2366 Central Ave. Baldwin, NY 11510

From ROSCOE, Sept 18, 2001: Hi MIRABEL: ‘Glad you finally got through. Talk to you soon. To RUSSELL in Orange: Your story leaves me speechless... (Kids, don’t try this at home!) To TYLER in Lubbock: Your fingers fumble now and then? Well then, you must be a bass player! Seriously, there’s no "fumble-proof" right-hand technique that I know of, if there were one, we’d ALL be geniuses. My plucking hand technique is basically a "rest-stroke, free-stroke" approach that I learned studying classical guitar in college. I was studying classical guitar and bass at the same time, and I simply applied one technique to the other. I find the more I practice, the less my plucking hand fumbles. It’s when I haven’t played much that I notice the lack of decisive attack. Let me know if you ever come to Austin and we can have a lesson. Mr. CRITTENDEN: See you at El Rancho. To CLIPART: Thanks. To RAY ENGLE: Derek O’Brien will be on the GUITAR SLINGERS CD for sure. He IS one of the tastiest blues players I’ve ever heard or worked with. Extremely under-rated. Glad you’re enjoying your RBV. ‘Hope to see you some time. To JIM in SC: If you’re somewhere between novice and intermediate levels as you say, then I would recommend BEGINNING BLUES BASS, Step One and Step Two. Those videos were aimed more specifically at the beginning to intermediate levels. BLUES FOUNDATIONS would also have some useful info for you, consider that maybe, as step three, since it has more advanced techniques and more difficult lines. I tried not to repeat myself in the videos, -as little as possible. To DAVE ROMANO: I enjoyed reading your post. It’s good to hear about where these little pieces I write go, and how they might be useful. I don’t have a book of these exercises out (yet); leave a FAX # though, I’ll send you something. To LEE in the UK: ‘Sounds like you’ve already made up your mind to check Austin out; I’d say, go for it. I know several musicians in Austin who’ve come from other countries. The green card thing can be a little tricky you know, but where there’s a strong enough will, there seems to be a way. There’s a lot of opportunity here if one is determined and resourceful enough. Good luck. Drop into Antone’s on a Monday night when you come. To CHRIS MILLER: Glad you enjoyed the videos. Yeah, most truly American music comes from the blues anyway, funk, rock, hip-hop... I can see how some of those lines could be adapted. Don’t forget me when you’re famous... To RICK D: I’m doing fine Rick, thanks. Fender is indeed going to manufacture a four-string version of my signature five-string model, to be called simply the "RB-IV." They were originally talking about a release date this year (Summer NAMM), but due to a production bottleneck, it now looks likely to be released Summer 2002. It will be worth the wait. At the risk of sounding immodest, I must say: it’s a great bass. I play my prototype(s) constantly. It’s the best four-string bass I’ve ever owned. Thanks for posting everyone.

Almost as if GOD himself spoke to me "Christopher thou shalt play the blues" I took the on the challenge and enjoy playing more now than ever. Roscoe I am a free lance classical bass player living and working in Manhattan and the inevitable has happened, I'm subbing on The Lion King. But to my suprise I had to buy a 5 string for the show, which I don't mind. I've allways played electric but the five string is a different thing , I actually really dig it. It really adds another demention to the pit.The problem is finding exercizes for practicing. During last nights show I found a Bass Player mag in the pit and read your article (from March 2001) about Maj Triad sidestepping for the 5 string. I think they are great and I want more. Do you have a book out about scales and arps? If not can you recomend a good 5 string book? Thanks Really dug your playing with Robben Dave Romano

I play a bit of bass (somewhere between novice and intermediate levels) and want to go more into blues. I'm looking for some opinions on Roscoe's videos. Essentially, would you advise going through "Blues Bass, Steps One & Two" or is most of the material covered again in "Blues Foundations"? I want to get off to a good start, but naturally don't want to pay for something twice. Thanx for any opinions.

When I was at Antone's I was impressed by his tasty playing. My RBV gets even better the more I play it! I'm already thinking about getting another & trying a different setup (maybe a Hi-C, or with flats). I guess I better hold off on the GAS until the v2 comes out. Best of luck on all of your projects. From ROSCOE, July 22, 2001: Wow, so sorry my friends, for not posting in a couple of months. ‘Better late than never I hope. I’ve been VERY busy writing, playing, producing, recording... more about all of that later, but with your permission, I’ll get right to some personal responses. To MATT: Good to hear from you again. ‘Hope CD#2 is everything you hoped for. Glad that you enjoyed Eric and the boys. I think you’ve got my info. Look forward to hearing from you again when you get the chance. Ciao. To RAY ENGLE(#1): The RB-V, version 2 is now slated for release at winter NAMM 2002 in Anaheim. Several changes are planned and I’m very tempted to list them for you, but I’d rather not let the cat out of the bag at this time. Hush, hush, you know. I would say though, that all changes made are improvements (though I expect there will always be some who will “like the old ones better!”) Thanks for checking in, sorry I missed you at Antone’s. Maybe next... To Bob, Terry, Joel, Taylor and Emily: THANKS! Big hugs. To RANDY NORMAN: Just another life-threatening moment on the road you know, ‘all in a day’s work. But hey, maybe I get to be on “Behind the Music” now? Glad you enjoyed the show... To FERNANDO: Hey buddy. Yeah, we’ve not been connecting on the phone, but I’ll keep trying. Love to your family. To VICKIE: Everyone’s wondering if we’re related, or if I just paid you for that post! Seriously, thanks for the fine compliment. Hope to see you in NC next time I’m touring (whenever that might be.) HI PEGGY: I’ll give you a holler as soon as I can. Take good care, Blessings. To KEITH in Hawaii: ‘Haven’t toured with Eric J. in a few years. To be honest, I don’t care to be touring right now, I’m more into producing/recording. I only miss getting together with with other musicians and the many friends I’ve made on the road. “One of these days,” I’m sure, but no current plans to tour. Thanks MIKE, for checking in and for your comments on the bass. I play rather low action on my basses. Holding the string down at the first fret and measuring just UNDER the string at the twelveth, I set height to: G-string: 5/64” D: 5/64” A: 5/64” E: 6/64” B: 7/64”. If the fret job is in really good shape and the neck is stable, I’ll bump ‘em down 1/64” from those measurements. Set-up is the toughest thing on all basses. It takes patience, diligence, and a good repairman to get them right. Good luck. Glad you like the bass. MARTIN is looking for a band, y’all. Any takers out there in the USA? Hey JEFF: Well, I really didn’t know that the Custom Shop wouldn’t build the RB model bass of your dreams. I know that they cost more through the Custom Shop, and that there’s a waiting list... O.K., one change in v2 will be the colors offered. Hope you like ‘em. By the way, THE STOLEN BASS (“GOLDIE”) HAS BEEN RECOVERED, and is now in my possession again, though radically well, defiled, if you will. ‘Quite screwed up and I had to buy it back from a pawn shop in Dallas, but it’s rescued and currently undergoing a total restoration. To ESPEN in Norway: Thanks for your comments on the bass. I am quite pleased with them and happy that so many other players like yourself are enjoying them as well. I will keep working on them. Hope that you enjoy v2 and the RB-IV that’s coming out next year. Hi TIM: I guess it’s pretty obvious what inspired me to write “Think Twice.” Break-ups are no fun, but something that almost everyone knows something about. My Rx for a split: move on, ASAP. There’s better yet to come. I’ll send the lyrics. Be well. To TRENT in S.A.: Best place to catch me is at Antone’s on Monday nights. I’m there most Mondays. Come up and say hello and we can talk about bass lessons. Thanks for checking in. To MARKUS: Glad you like the bass and thanks for your comments. I play P’s and J basses; ‘guess I tried to get the best from both... Hi APICHART: I’ll update the websight when I can find the right person to do it. I’m too busy myself to mess with it, but I’ll try to get it done. Good to hear from you again. To MIRABEL: HI! To EMILY: Hello! I enjoyed your visit. Tell your Mom to bring you for another visit soon. To RYAN: Welcome to the USA. I wouldn’t want to lay any money down on the possibility of Eric, Tommy and I working together any time soon. Eric is heavily into the ALIEN thing, so I just don’t know if that will ever happen. Always a chance, I suppose... To IPLAYLOUD: The guys at Fender were telling about the Fender Forum. I checked it out for a few minutes last year, a cool deal. I don’t really have the time to do much right now (I’ve got 4 productions working in various stages) but maybe after RBV.v2 comes out... Thanks for making me hip to it again. Hi JOCHEN: I’m not in the business of selling basses myself, but you might try looking in VINTAGE GUITAR magazine or on ebay. To RAY ENGLE(#2): It was your post that made me realize how long it’s been since I posted. Sometimes I need a little push! I thought I’d be making another instructional video this year, but my plans have changed. Instead, I’m producing a project called “Texas Guitar Slingers” that is keeping me very busy. We hope to get vol. 1 out this year with a vol. 2 to follow. Glad you dig the RB-V. Stay in touch, my friend. To RUSSELL: Your influences are Gene Simmons and ...ME? Now THAT blows my mind. I would have never imagined my name and Gene Simmons’ being mentioned in the same breath. I’m speechless. Gene, wherever you are, I’m game to autograph that man’s bass anytime... By the way, where’s Orange, TX? To TYLER: I think RAY’s got it right, it sounds like flatwounds or “half-rounds” might be the way to go for you. By the way, I ordinarily play round wounds, but I ALWAYS go to a session with a P-bass strung with “flats.” To ALFREDO: I’ll get in touch with you concerning your project. Good luck with it. THANKS EVERYONE FOR YOUR PATIENCE WITH ME, (AND FOR NOT WRITING ANY NASTY POSTS.) I’ll try not to make it so long next time. Be well, friends.

Just my 2 cents, Tyler, but you might try flatwounds on your bass. They help deepen the lows & cut the high-end overtones, as compared to roundwounds strings. - Ray

Hey Roscoe. I love to play bass, and I'm one of those bassists that likes a deep, warm bass tone. I've been able to produce that sound with my amp, but I'm still not quite sure what strings would do the best job for producing a warm tone. I'm currently using Rotosound Roundwound bass strings. Would you have an opinion of what kind of string I should use for that kind of tone? Thanks.

Roscoe - Three weeks ago I purchased one of your signature 5-strings in Shoreline Gold. It's the best bass I ever played! I set it up per your recommended tolerances, then upped the action a tad because I tend to dig in. (I finally figured it out after 30+ years of playing: I don't turn up loud enough, then over-compensate by hitting the strings harder. Like most of us, I'm a work-in-progress.) It plays beautifully and sounds great. I've already begun to rationalize buying a version 2 when (if) it comes out. I also checked out your instructional video. Nice job! How about another one? It's been 3 whole months since you've posted some news. Lay some wisdom upon us, my brother!

ROSCOE!!! You HAVE to visit the Fender Discussion Page at WWW.FENDERFORUM.COM!!! There is a Bass section, and you and your basses come up VERY frequently. The guys would TOTALLY flip if you stopped in. Will Ray, Ritchie Fliegler, Morgan Ringwald, Mike Lewis....many performers and Fender big-shots post up often!!! EMail me and I'll hook you up with Chris Greene who runs the thing, and we can make a BIG deal in the Bass section for you!! You never know when it may help sell some videos or CD's!!!

Hey Roscoe! Thought I'd stop by and check out what you're up to.. The last post I wrote you was when I was a Canadian, but as you might have guessed from my written location, I'm an American now! Anyways, I've talked to Tommy a bit recently, and I had mentioned to him how you once told me that you would like to see the Tones lineup hit it again. Well, it turns out that he is on the same page as you are, my friend. I agree with him when he says that there is some great music to be made. I know Eric and Tommy had a falling out at the end of the Venus Isle sessions, but do you think that you, Eric, Tommy and Steve will ever grace the stage again? I know I speak for many people in this forum when I say it would be wonderful to see the Tones lineup stompin' again! What are the odds, ya think? Rock on... _Ryan

Roscoe - I just bought an RB-V and am madly in love with it! I am pretty fussy about basses (my other one is a '66 slab-body P-bass), and when I finally decided to break down and buy a five, I tried EVERYTHING. Thanks for a great design job with the Fender guys. In your interviews you say it has Jazz bass string spacing, but I found it to be more Precision-like in its feel. The thing I hate about most J-basses is the baseball bat feel at the nut, and the RB-V is flat and broad up there, just the way I like it. And besides, those pickups absolutely ROCK! Thanks again.

Hey Roscoe: I have met you on several occasions out here in Hollywood (at The Mint, House of Blues, Billboard Live, etc.) and have always considered you my favorite bass player of all time (and a great guy too!). I just wanted you to know that recently I have been going through a very painful break-up with my girl and yesterday I was listening to "Handful of Blues" and when heard "Think Twice", I all of a sudden had a new perspective. Can't thank you enough. I would love to have a copy of these lyrics, where can I find them? Thanks again, Tim

Hello Roscoe, I have had two of your signature model Fender V's, one I sold to a good freind the other is mine to keep, great job on its construction, I will continue to look for your stolen gold one through different sources, sorry to hear it was ripped off! I freind of mine was down to take a private lesson from you and said it was very enlightening. Is it true that Fender will not build me a Roscoe Beck V in Off White or a Cream color with a tortoise shell pick guard,it would be an incredible looking bass or,in all black. The custom shop tells me they cannot, and if I came close, it would cost me about $3,000.00. It must be something to do with your signature. Anyway, the Candy Apple is nice enough. Just thought I would say hello and thank you for the inspiration!! Cheers.

Hi Roscoe, I own a Fender RB-V, that I love and use as my main axe. I've had it for awhile and have always maintained the factory settings, because they suited my playing style. Now, I'm looking to lower the string height and get faster action. Working with what seems to be acceptable relief in the neck, I can't seem to lower the strings to where I'd like them to be without getting buzz when pressing at the 12th fret. Do you set the action low on your RB-V? If so, can you share the string settings you find the best? Right now, I'm using D'Adarrio medium guage strings. Thank you. By the way, I really enjoy (and learn a lot) listening to the way you structure your bass lines into a song.

Roscoe, I wanted to apologize for nearly getting you killed before a show at the Varsity Theatre in Baton Rouge, La., in 1996. Maybe you remember; some friends and I were in my car, looking for the Varsity, and I spotted someone standing in the stairwell of a tourbus. I asked if this was the place, and you said yes, then came over to meet us. As you approached our car, another car came whizzing by, making you jump back. I would NOT have wanted to explain this to Eric ("I saved part of his thumb, Mr. Johnson..."). Anyway, we all enjoyed the show, and I look forward to seeing you another time.

Hello, Roscoe. I've been saving my "gig money" for a new RB-V (my '68 Telecaster bass needs a rest!) and just wanted to know what sort of changes will be coming in version 2. If I'm lucky, I,ll be visiting Austin in a few months. Hopefully you'll be playing at Antone's. I saw Blue Monday a year ago, after SXSW 2000, but I guess you weren't available that night. Of course, the band STILL smoked! Hey, I've got an idea! If I get down there, let's have lunch and go bass shopping. It's on me! ;) Thanks for the music: your work is both inspired & inspiring. - Ray

HELLO EVERYONE. I've been busier than usual lately, -more on that later. GENERAL INFORMATION: I'm not currently touring with Robben Ford or Eric Johnson so you can't expect to see me at one of their shows--though I'm sure you'll still experience some great music if you make it out to see them. I can recommend both of their current bands very highly. To your questions. To Roberto in Italy: I think I just answered that question, my friend, but I look forward to the next time I’m in your fair country. ‘Many fine memories of trips there... Hi MIRABEL: I remember you and Karin. I hope you’re both doing well. I’ll be in touch. To GIULIO: Wonderful. Glad to hear that my basses have a presence in Italy. Have a good time with the instrument... To JOSEPH: Sure, you can string your 5-string as a “tenor five.” You’ll only need a new nut and set-up. Simple as that. Good luck. To ROLAND: A good question I really don’t have the answer for... I guess I’ve ALWAYS assumed it Is available left-handed. If not available as a production model, the FENDER CUSTOM SHOP would certainly make one for you... To STEVE SPEAR: I do use flat wounds on a couple of P-Basses... Chorusing doesn’t sound as pronounced with flatwounds, but would it work? Sure... Hi SCOTT: Glad you found the video of Montreaux ‘91. I doubt if i’ve ever seen it. Outlaw Blues is on no CD that I know of, though we recorded it in the TALK TO YOUR DAUGHTER era, circa ‘85 or so. It appeared as a bonus record in GUITAR PLAYER around that time, as I recall. I’m sure there’re copies floating around... I don’t believe Tom Brechtlein is with Robben at the moment... To AKASH, ALFONSO and HECTOR: Great meeting you guys at SXSW. That was big fun, the high point of my day. I’ll be in touch. To APICHART: I have one instructional book out, based on my BEGINNING BLUES BASS videos, “BLUES BASS BASICS,” Warner Bros. Publications. There will be more instructional material to come... LEANDER: ‘Won’t make the CAFE HAHN this time, but you know, I can still almost hear the Rhine from here... Hi RAY: Thanks for the nice compliment. I see no reason the BLUE LINE could not reform one day. ‘Never know, ‘could happen... To IAN: Thank you , my friend. Sorry you’ve lost your book. That’s happened to me too. I was looking for one just this week for some odd reason and found it misplaced. The odd size perhaps... I’m swamped at the moment, can any of the readers of this website help this fellow out with a copy??? To BILL H.: Good to hear from you. I’ll be in touch. To RUDIGER: I’ve given clinics on tour; there’s usually not enough time for private lessons. I wouldn’t say it’s impossible though... Only, at the moment, I’m not touring and keeping travel to a minimum. Thanks for the interest and the questions, y’all...

Hello, Roscoe! Since I've listened to you on Eric Johnson's and Robben Ford's CDs you've become my most influencial bassist. I love your phrasing and the way you throw in odd little time (I'm not sure changes is the right word, but) changes. Okay, enough mushy stuff. I need help in tracking down a copy of the booklet that comes with your Blues Foundation Video. I bought the tape about four years ago and then became VERY busy at work and am just now getting around to studying. I CAN'T FIND THE BOOK! Must have lost it during my move from SoCal. If you know of anyway I can get a copy, legally 8^o , I'd be more than happy to pay for it. Didn't find anything on WarnerBros site. Sorry to bug you about it. Hello Roscoe! I have a question for ya.. I recently bought a five string bass. I had to give up my four string to be able to purchase the five. Quite frequently I come across the need to play with the "E" string being the top string (opposed to being my low B in the five string setup), espically when I'm playing with my old punk band. I quote you form bass player: "I dig the tenor 5 as well (EADG + high C). Maybe it’s a holdover from my 6-string days..." So is it ok to tune my bass EADB + High C? my first bass (kinda cheap)was way wacked out when I even put a set of heavier guage strings on it, I had the trust rod adjusted at the shop and it still never worked out.. my new bass is a Ibanez Soundgear (5 string), its ALOT better in quality, seems durable. I was just afraid to mess it up... Thanks...

To JOHNNY D: Thanks for your enthusiasm. I'm glad to have a way to communicate with folks like yourself. A role model? Dang, that's heavy, but thanks! I'll do my best to be worthy. To TREVOR from Belfast: On "Blues Foundations," if I remember correctly, we tracked using the (Jensen) stereo DI's in my concert amp rig. That would have been post-Alembic preamp and post effects. There might have been a "straight from the bass" DI also, but it's doubtful. I almost never use a straight DI from the bass these days. Even if I don't use an amp, I'll generally use a preamp of some kind. question #2: I use both the Simandl technique (which I learned as a freshman at North Texas State University) AND "finger-per-fret" depending on what feels the more natural for the passage I'm playing. I think the Simandl fingerings are great, very comfortable -and quite logical playing octaves and such. Then again, sometimes "guitar fingering" makes a lot more sense, especially on electric, of course. So why not both? Good questions, Trevor. Thanks.

Hi Roscoe, how are you? First off I'd like to echo Johnny's sentiments, so thank's again. I've got a couple of questions for you. On the 'Blues Foundations' video, is the bass sound direct from the bass or is it through the Alembic pre-amp etc, I'd love to know. Secondly, do you use the Simandl technique on the Zeta/Double bass or do you use a finger per-fret technique? Thanks and stay well. Trevor

Hey Roscoe.. Johnny D here. Been a while since I last posted and just needed to talk to a fellow music enthusiast (albeit virtually). I say this because I was recently talking with some people at a Monte Montgomery show and made mention of Monte's former bass player Chris Maresh w/ respect to how it appears that his talents are more utilized with Eric and Alien Love Child.. Although their puzzled look didn't phase me at first -- I went on to share my observation that sometimes when Chris is really jammin' he gets this look on his face which is highly reminiscent of a look that Jaco would get -- Lips flattened out kinda like he's making a motor boat sound. After I finished talking they looked at me and said that they had no idea who ANY of these people are! Doh. Well, with eyebrows raised and a smile that must have been half pitty and half amusement, I walked off feeling kinda stupid. Ahhhh. Now I feel better. Sorry to have share that but... Anyway, thanks again for the inspiration -- I think I can speak on behalf of all of the "friends" and "enthusiasts" that post to this forum when I say that I feel very fortunate to be able to share thoughts and info with you on this site. In addition to being one of the finest bass players alive today -- you're a great role model and, believe it or not, have been a very positive influence in all of our lives. Thanks a Million!

FEB. 21, 2001: Hi ROBERT: Well, until about two weeks ago, I never owned a black jazz bass. I did briefly have possession of one I was checking out, around 1978 or ‘79. That was a 60's jazz bass with a tortoise pickguard, refinished black. I believe it belonged to Kyle Brock at the time. It may be that is the one you ended up with...I never bought it though. I bought one bass only from Danny Thorpe, an olympic white '64 jazz that I almost immediately traded (too heavy.) Good to hear from you, ‘ hope to see you around Austin. Hi VINNIE: I’m blushing already. Hey, thanks for the good words. I enjoyed our hang. Let’s stay in touch. Hey MATT: Fair enough. I do plan to be at the next winter NAMM. See ya there.

Hello Everyone. Roscoe's post on 2/12 mentions a bassist he recently got together with. That was me and I want to let everyone on this forum know what a wonderful individual Roscoe is. I was in Austin on a business trip and my time was limited. Roscoe was kind enough to schedule our lesson around my availability, not his. What was supposed to be a one hour lesson turned into a 2 1/2 to 3 hour lesson/hang. I got to check out some cool instruments and here some new music he is playing on and producing, not to mention a great lesson. If any of you are thinking of contacting Roscoe while in Austin but are hesitant because you think a player of his caliber is unapproachable, you are dead wrong. He is a great guy, quite giving of his time and knowledge. Don't hesitate to contact him. Thanks Roscoe, and if I'm in Austin again next year I hope we can hook up. Thanks a million. Vinnie

Hello Mr. Beck, what kind of strings (brand & gauge) do you use? Thanks and best wishes, Rüdiger

Great to visit your site Mr. Beck! I am the proud owner of a 1997 RB5 and one day I may get good at playing the 5 string! Being a longtime Austin resident (1981) I remember visiting Mike Stephen's shop on East 12th St. and seeing the pickups he was going to put on your six string bass! I do have a quick question for you. Back in 1984-85 I sold a refinished black 1965 Jazz Bass to Danny Thorpe, rest his soul, and have always wondered what became of that bass. He later said it was sold to you and I was wondering if you did own the bass if I may come and "visit" with it again sometime. The bass was poorly refinished black, and had what Mike Stephens thought was a Pau Ferro fingerboard. It was a pretty board! Serial number was L90747. I'd appreciate any info on this bass if it was you who purchased it many years ago. Thanks!

Hey APICHART: For slapping I use either: 1) both pickups single coil mode, full volume -or- 2) (sometimes) neck pickup only, single coil mode. Both settings work well.

Hi...Roscoe......just a little curiosity..........Which type of pickup selection did you make when you played the "Manhattan" in G3 Tour? esp. when you slapped. It sounded so cool

Monday Feb. 12, 2001: Wow, it's been over a month since I've entered "The Forum." Sorry it's taken me this long to get to answering the many messages, but better late than never I suppose. To TREVOR in Belfast: A belated Happy New Year to you. Glad that you're happy with your RB5. / Current "live" collaborations: Blue Monday (The Antone's house band, most every Monday night in Austin), blues harpist James Cotton (w/ Blue Monday backing), Darden Smith (duo), Willis Alan Ramsey, The Triphonics (jazz trio w/ pianist Rich Harney), James Polk & Passenger (occasional reunions) pianist Terry Bowness, guitarist/songwriter Stephen Bruton, and Paul Glasse/Mitch Watkins. You'll have to come to Texas to hear any of these aggregations, though.’ Still not touring at the moment. Recent recording dates (not yet released): guitarist Andrew Hardin, Terry Bowness, and vocalists Marcia Ball, Toni Price. Hi HAL: Yeah, I've had similar experiences with sound men and my bass. Also, I checked out a board tape once when I was in Europe with Robben, the bass was straight DI, not usually the best of sounds, but it was so full, yet clean and defined that I have to admit, I was taken aback at how good it sounded. It does start with the instrument doesn't it? I'd be happy to meet you in Austin. There's rarely a time when I'm not playing somewhere so come on, and let me know when you plan to be here. Hi MATT: Well, ‘ guess I really missed this one. No, ‘ didn't make Anaheim, though I'll likely go to Nashville NAMM and Anaheim next year. Hope your gig went well. If you're ever down Texas way, I'd be happy to hook up with you for a lesson. I recently got together with a bassist who contacted me via the forum and who was visiting for a few days. Always glad to get together with other players. Hello to NEIL: I set up my basses with low action if the neck will permit it. My ideal specs (measured at 12th fret holding down the first): G-string: 4/64, D: 4/64, A: 4/64, E: 5/64, B: 6/64 to 7/64 depending how the response is. Then I set pickup height (string held down at the last [22nd] fret, measured from top of pickup to bottom of string): G-string side: 2/64, E-string side 3/64. Those are really critical tolerances you can get away with only if your bass is in top condition. If you get buzzes, or strings slapping the pickups, you may have to adjust those settings a bit. Hi DAVE: Thanks for checking in. Well, there’s a remote chance you got an original prototype, but it’s unlikely. I have most of the protos, Fender probably held on to one or two. There was one proto that had the volume-volume-tone set up, (and a photo of me with it taken at NAMM the year the basses were unveiled.) If you somehow ended up with it, it would be easy to tell: the original protoypes all had four-bolt neckplates. The six-bolt plate wasn’t added until production. More likely someone modified one, or ordered it that way via the custom shop. But if you’ve got a proto, you’ve really got something there! Hi APICHART: Glad you’re getting the best from your bass. It takes some doing to keep the instruments in tip-top shape, but I find the extra effort is worth it. Hi GINA: Next time you come to Antone’s, please come up and say hi. I remember the NAMM in ‘93. I assembled a one-performance only band “Little Elvis and the Astronauts.” Great group of musicians: Tom Brechtlein on drums, Derek O’Brien and Denny Freeman from Austin on guitars, Buzzy Feiten also on guitar, (Doyle Bramhall II sat in as well on guitar), Russell Ferrante on keys, Harry Bowens of Was Not Was on vocals. The band that almost never was. Hope to see you up north or in Austin. Take Care. To BRUCE ANDERSON: When my boy gets a bit older maybe he’ll put down the drumsticks long enough to pick up that baseball glove... re: Austin opportunities, the situation here: ‘ lots of gigs, ‘ lots of players to fill them. Housing prices are up, making the once affordable Austin more difficult to manage on club wages alone. Many musicians I know have day jobs here, but that doesn’t mean they’re unhappy. It’s still a great place to live, (though damn hot in summer.) There’s opportunity here, just nothing guaranteed, you know. Hello EMSAL from Turkey: Happy to hear from you. Sorry, but I don’t know of a Robben Ford songbook with bass clef transcriptions. That doesn’t mean it might not exist, but I’m not aware of one. Anyone else know of such an item? I love the closing of your message: life is beautiful with it’s everything... Hi BRIAN: I’ll be in touch. Hello DANNY from FW: Yes, I remember the set list... Thanks for the good words. Please feel free to “borrow” whatever you can make use of. Was it a Stravinsky or maybe Picasso quote (?) that goes something like: “good artists borrow, great artists steal...” Guess I “borrowed” a thing or two from Jaco, who did some “stealing” himself... Hello BANI: Hey, thanks. Never know, I might make it back to the Pacific Rim again. Sure hope so. Right now Eric Johnson is touring with Alien Love Child, Chris Maresh on bass. Check it out. Hello DAN from Dale City: Please allow me to return the blessing. How very nice. Thank you. The tortoise guard was discontinued on the sunburst, so hang on to that one. Glad you’re loving it. Keep in touch. HI BOB from Lufkin: You’re right on about the live broadcast. There were a few of those done around that time from different locations. I don’t know if KLBJ has a copy or not, but one of the Passenger members probably does. I had those tapes at one time, but they’re not in my possession now. There’s quite a library of unreleased Passenger studio and live recordings, and one Austin City Limits show that aired in about ‘81. One day we ex-Passengers might go to work on that material and release it, but right now it seems to make more sense to press ahead with new projects. I’ll let you know if any of it becomes available. Thanks for checking in.

Hi Roscoe: Many years ago around 79-80 there was a Passenger at the Treehouse live concert broadcast over, I think, KLBJ-FM. I taped that on cassette from the radio and played it to death. I wish I still had it! Anyway, do you think that KLBJ might still have that stored somewhere? I loved Passenger and would give a nut of your choosing for a copy or CD or MP3 of any Passenger stuff you might make available. Bob Mills Lufkin TX

Especially my bassist in the band is crazy about your style of playing. Oh c'mon man, get down here and I'll pay whatever it costs to get to your concert in Singapore!! My friends used to like these boybands. But when I let them hear Manhattan in both Venus Isle version and the G3 Version. Especially the girls said Manhattan was very romantic!! Pacific Rim!!

Just a hello and, thanks for your great musical contributions! Also, I met your sister at a Taylor W. show in Dallas, Tx recently. I went on to tell her how much I admired your style of playing. So much that when every bass player in the world was learning Jaco, I was learning Roscoe. I hope you don't mind if I borrow some of your influence. By the way, Thanks for giving me your set list after E.J's show at the Caravan of Dreams! Yeah that guy. See ya soon, Danny Fowler

Hi Roscoe, I guess you have a valid point electing not touring after the birth of you son for a while. CONGRADULATIONS, a little late. If you where to come to Madison, I'm sure I can set you up with a hat vedor that would keep your head from turning into an ice block. I wear one all the time, it actually keeps my fingers loose for playing. After your reply about coming to Austin to visit Antone's, I have been concidering that proposition, actually due this weather we have been having hear. I think I would rather move there. I would be interested to know what opportunities are there for a bassist who can walk in and do the gig. What better way to spend time, In warm weather, cool music and a smoking band to play with. The only other thing that would be better than the above would be a new born, but at my age, "I DON'T THINK SO". I'll see ya later gator and get a baseball glove in your sons hands. Bruce Anderson

Hi Roscoe, saw you over at Antone's this past Monday. I was psyched to see you live. The last time I saw you play live was in California at a NAMM show when they showcased the new SRV guitar back in '93. You were awesome then too, but I think I like you better playing on the 4 string, you had some great solos at Antones. (Nice website too!) Hope to see you up in New England soon!!

Hi Roscoe: I just bought a used Fender RB Signature which I fell in love with as soon as I picked it up and played it in the store.Much to my surprise it has two volume pots and a tone pot instead of the usual master volume with tone pot and 3-way toggle switch. The two mini-toggles are as I expected. The sales guy had no idea how old this bass is. Did I get a real old one that predated the 3- way toggle or what? It's in mint shape so it's hard to guess the age.It didn't stop me from buying it anyway. It's a great bass.By the way I'm a HUGE fan!!

Hi Roscoe, Eric Johnson is hitting Vancouver Wednesday Jan 31. Unfortunately I have to be at the airport that night to collect a couple of English buddies of mine over for a visit. I guess it's a good thing you're not joining Eric this time around, otherwise my buddies would be stranded, hehe. Just a quick techie question (apologies if you've answered this a million times before - but I checked the archives and didn't see it): what height do you set the RB5 pickups with the LaBella Hard Rockin' Steels? Thanks in advance and Happy New Year!

Hello Mr. Beck. I am wondering if you will be at NAMM this week. If not, then the rest of this post really doesn't matter. If you are, I'll be playing bass with Jaye Foucher at the Guitarapalooza show on Thursday night. If you're around, you might want to check it out. Also playing this show with the other performers are Michael Manring, Phil Bynoe, and Bryan Beller (with Mike Kennealy), so if I'm not enough to get you to go maybe those guys are :) Also, though I'm sure you'll be quite busy if you are out there, I'd love to get together for a lesson if possible. If you don't mind e-mailing me a response that'd be great, and if I don't hear from you, I'll look for you at the Fender booth. Thanks, and God bless. Matt Stein

Hi Roscoe, long time no "talk" to. Quick story; I played a gig this past weekend in Macon, Ga., of course playing my teal RB5, we had Ronnie Hammond (lead singer of ARS) doing sound there. Sound check was a quick level check, and off we go. After the 1st set, he comes up and is looking at my bass, I ask if my rig is giving him a problem out front, he tells me this is the easiest and best bass sound of any he has worked with. Was I elated? In a word, YES! Was I surprised? No. This is one fine bass, but it looks like I'll have to have a V2 to go with it. Will they be available by summer NAMM? Also, what is your playing schedule? If I can get a break from gigging, I would love to see you playing in Austin. Thanks!

Hi, I just wanted to wish you a Happy New Year. I've had the RB5 for about 3-4 years now and I'm still getting compliments for the sound, so thank you very much! Aside from the Passengers re-union what else have you been involved with re: playing, producing and writing? Plus I say you play in Leeds, England about 5-6 years ago and that WAS inspiring. So take care and thanks for the music over the years. All the best, Trev.

January 8, 2001 / A couple of folks have requested an address, so here 'tis: ROSCOE BECK, P.O. BOX 27414, Austin, TX 78755-2414. Please keep any packages small as possible--it's a small p.o. box. Thanks. And here's the latest on the POLK/PASSENGER RE-UNION scheduled for Feb. 1st. Due to the unavailability of original Passenger drummer Steve Meador, the gig will now be billed as "James Polk and Friends." It will still be a special event, that's a promise. venue: the ELEPHANT ROOM, Thursday FEB. 1st, 9:30 p.m. / To GEOFFREY: Thanks for the good words on the bass. A lot of thought and hard work did go into it, so I'm particularly glad that the RB-V resonates with so many other players like yourself. I'm still working on the instruments (constantly, I'm afraid) and have made some small changes on the upcoming 2001-v2. At the same time, I'm well aware that some players will say "the old ones are better!" It's inevitable, isn't it? So, your "Goldie" will become "vintage" as the colors change with v2. FYI; all pickups on RB basses are still HANDMADE by Bill Lawrence, and he's the best in my bass book... To BRUCE ANDERSON: Yes, I have been staying off the road--since the birth of my son some 2+ years ago. It's much harder to leave than before. I hope that I will get to Madison this year though, I like the town, even if it is cold. Seems like I buy a hat each time I visit... oh, and thanks for the compliments. Maybe you should visit Austin (where it's a little warmer) and check out the blues at Antone's. Last Friday, we (the Antone's Blue Monday house band) backed James Cotton with special guest Jimmie Vaughan. It was rockin'...I think we got the blues changes right... Hi BOB: See the above Polk/Passenger info. See ya. Hello DONOVAN: My mother has mentioned you several times. I love Bluegrass, if you're playing in the area, please let me know. I'll be in touch. HAPPY NEW YEAR.

Roscoe, are you taking an extened vaction from playing on the road? There are some of us who would love to see you come to Madison or even close. But, without you on tour we will have to settle for a bunch of second rate bassists who can not even play blues changes. Roscoe, Thank you for designing a wonderful bass. I've owned my shoreline gold "Roscoe" since late 97'. I ordered it after reading your article in BASS PLAYER, it was obvious that you put a lot of thought and effort into the design. You made sense and you sounded like a man of integrity. I'm glad I trusted you.....my "Roscoe" is still very cool and still my main bass! Absolute best regards, Geoff PS. I'll send you some of my stuff with my bands. Shoot me an address.

HELLO ALL: I've been away from the website Public Forum over the holidays. But I'm glad to hear from so many good folks. THE BIG NEWS FROM ROSCOE: I’ve been holding off this news until after the holidays. A second meeting happened at Fender USA in mid-November. The upshot of it is: a Roscoe Beck Signature Four String Bass AND the RB Signature Five String -version 2 are both being planned for 2001, hopefully ready for summer NAMM in Nashville. I’m very happy that Fender has agreed to produce the four string and the new v-2 five, and I thank everyone who has requested these instruments. There will be more info and perhaps a photo or two when the website is updated. To GOOSEMON and BRITTANY: Hey. Sorry we missed last month. You know... Brittany, I don't remember that dice trick of yours, though I think I lost some money in the deal! Talk to you soon. Hi DAMON: Glad you're enjoying the video. Regarding the bridge foam: early P-basses had foam rubber glued to the underside of the chrome bridge cover. Leo Fender's thought was that this arrangement would make the sustain characteristics of a Precision bass more closely resemble that of an acoustic bass. Not really true as it turned out, but it helped players like James Jamerson create their signature sounds. It was really the Jamerson-type sound I was after with the bridge foam and flatwounds. And yes, I once lived in Atlanta, Texas. For three years 1968 to 1971. Hi JASON in Lake Jackson: Glad you're enjoying your bass. You know, after fourteen years with a six-string and over six years with my signature five string, I’m still getting used to them, but heck, sometimes a four-string feels like a new instrument if I've been away from it for a few days...enjoy, my friend. To ANDERS: Thanks for the info. Of course I don't know which gig in Stockholm you'd be referring to, but I can say that I've always enjoyed playing in Stockholm. What a beautiful city! I love playing the Stockholm Jazz Festival on the waters edge... just fantastic. Hi CHRIS: Yes, finger dexterity is important... and perhaps even more so is: 1) staying present in performance, 2) striving for feel, 3) one's interaction with other musicians and, 4) maintaining the creative spark. But to answer your question, dexterity is something I've struggled with my entire career as a bassist. For me, there's no easy solution. Every day practice is the only thing that really seems to make a difference. If you're wondering what to practice, you might check out some of my BASS PLAYER columns. The earlier ones especially ("Warming Up" Sept. '99, "Major Scale Warm Up" Jan. 2000, "Finger Independence" March 2000) give some useful tips. The column itself, is centered on the "practice" concept. Whether or not your fingers become more “nimble,” at least you'll have a bit more confidence about where to place them in the heat of battle. Happy practicing! Hi BRIAN: We'll be in touch. Hello SCOTT CARPENTER: Glad you got something from the site. Thanks for checking in. To EDTtheMAN: Hope to see you next time in Deutschland. Hey BILL: You big jokester. Is it not enough you destoyed my career as a record producer with nasty comments to the label? How can I ever repay you? Love and great big allergies to you. (gotcha) To LEE: Love YOU Babe. It is BABE, isn't it? Hi NEIL: Glad to hear that you love your own RB "Goldie." I tend to agree with your sound evaluation of the bass. From all of the experimentation and evaluations I’ve done, it seems one just can't make a five-string sound EXACTLY like a four, no matter what. But I think the the new Signature Five String-version 2 will get even a bit closer to the sound of that ‘66 Jazz Bass. Thanks Neil, for the nice comments. Hi CRAIG: Congratualations on your CD. I'll get in contact. LORI: Hey! long time...Thanks for the kind words. There will be a Polk/Passenger reunion at the ELEPHANT ROOM (Austin) on Feb.1st. Come down and re-live a bit of Austin's Jazz heyday. Great to hear from you.

Hi Roscoe. I've played Trace Elliots for 15 years and, after coming full circle with basses, I've wound up a Fender guy with reissue '62 Precision and '75 Jazz basses amongst others. Top of the pile though is the Shoreline Gold RB5 (all over my CD due out in Feb 2001). Tone-wise we're right in the same neighbourhood (UK spelling, grin). I'm intrigued by the prospect of the RB4 and the RB5 version 2 - i'll post my vote on the Fender forum. My question is; how close do you feel you come to recreating the sound of your '66 Jazz? My feeling is that, with the pau ferro board, it's mid-way between an alder/rosewood and an ash/maple Jazz. Or are my ears fried from too much low-end? ;-) Congrats on a great site.

Roscoe,I know finger dexterity is a major deal in playing the bass. I think my ability to play is being limited because I don't have enough finger dexterity. Would you know of any good exercises to make my fingers on both my hands a little more nimble?

Hallo there, This is a short message from a fan in dear old Sweden. I saw you with Robben in Stockholm maybe 5 years ago and it was a great gig. The other guys in the band wasn´t so bad either. I just surfed into your site and its fun to what gear you use. I´m a bassplayer myself and I will recomend a great swedish "babybass", electric double??? called Jensen with Wilson pickups, it´s a great instrument, and beautiful. Keep on finding those terrific notes over there, hope to see you in Sweden soon. Anders

Hey Roscoe, I have been doing the initial watching of your Bass Foundations video, and I noticed that in one segment you had a chunk of foam stuffed under the strings on your P bass near the bridge. I was just curious on when you did this and why. Obviously you are muting some extraneous noise out, but what dictates when you do this? Liking what I've seen so far on the tape. Cheers, DeS

To ALLEN TUNGET: Congrats on your new bass. All the RB-V basses that I've seen from the factory, come with strings through the bridge. The best strings that I've found to use on the bass are LaBella Hard Rockin Steels, set M45B. I liked the strings enough to change my endorsement deal. The B-string is simply the best on the market, hands down. They can be difficult to find, but they're worth it. To BANI in Singapore: Thank you for the good words. Hope to see you on the Pacific Rim sometime. To SCOTT in Watseka: Thanks, glad you're enjoying the Robben Ford CD's. Did RF & the Blue Line break up? I almost don't know how to answer... We didn't break up exactly, we just quit working together. We had been recording/touring for about 8 or 9 years solid, and it was time for a change. Robben wanted to try some new things, I wanted to move out of Los Angeles...it just kinda went like that. No one has ruled out the posibility of re-forming, and I wouldn't be at all surprised to see it happen sometime. If it does, you'll hear about it here at my site or Robben's. re: concert videos; there are no official concert releases that I know of, unfortunately. There IS a truckload of video footage out there circulating. We did everything from the TONIGHT SHOW (with Johnny Carson, still!) to Japanese television. There's a video of the "Beaches Concert" in Ontario, Canada from about 1992 or so, that smokes. There was a VH-1 thing from West Palm Beach even earlier. Lots of European stuff: "Ohnefilter" (full length German music show), "Montreaux Jazz Festival" (several years) "Pistoia Blues Festival" (Full length Italian blues concert), just to name a few off the top of my head. If they've been made commercially available, I just don't know about it. Bootlegs abound, though. Good luck finding the stuff. Let me know if you do. Hello Mr. ANONYMOUS: I'm not famaliar with the Hartke 3500 bass head, so I don't know what rating it has. Generally a head of 80 watts or above with a 4X10 cab should be enough for a jazz gig, but I always use a least two such cabs if there's going to be blues or R&B involved. Hope that helps. To VINNIE: I'll be in town as far as I know. I'll contact you and we'll put it together. To COREY: I'll be in contact re; your message.

To message below: I've just bought it for a couple months. Yes....you've got 2 options to string RB5. First is String through body. Second is String through the bridge. And both ways need no adjustment. I've just bought Fender .040-.100 stainless strings (just wanna save by leaving the 5th strings unchanged). After I had put them on, I felt not so right about it. Even though it sounded brighter than nickel strings, I still prefer playing with nickel ones. Another reasons for changing to smaller strings size is to lower my action. But it turned out that it didn't help. So I'd recommend .045-.130 set with nickel strings

Quick question to Roscoe or anyone with a new RB5. I got mine used, but in mint condition, my question is.... does the RB5 come with the strings fed through the body??? Mine currently isn't , I was wondering how it was setup when new?? Thanks, also.... what strings do you reccomend for this fine bass?? Thanks in advance. Al

Thanks for the reply. I really appreciate it. There is someone in my area that is teaching with David Brandon, but my brother is currently taking lessons from Brandon, and I'm taking tennis lessons right now, so it's kind of hard to afford all those lessons. I'm just trying to find a way to listen to a song and improvise without any trouble, or say "Hey, that sounds like this or that. That will go good with this." Once again, I really appreciate the reply. Thanks. Tyler

Lubbock, TX USA - Wednesday, November 08, 2000 at 18:37:48 (EST)
To TYLER: How to apply theory to bass guitar? To begin with, one has to truly understand the theory one is studying or it might as well be Greek. It has to be PRESENTED (or discovered) in a way that makes an immediate connection with you, and you must then be able to transfer that knowledge to your instrument in a useful and tangible way. If you're having difficulties understanding the music theory you're studying, it probably isn't being presented in a way that is "user friendly" to you. Personally, I've never done that well with music theory from books, unless it's something I read and learn while my hands are on the instrument. Often, I've done better when I "experiment," --run across a familiar sound on the instrument: something rings a bell, I investigate, discern what logic is behind the sound of the notes I'm hearing, and maybe afterward find out what it's called. //If you can find a good teacher in the Lubbock region, that would be the way to go. Or let me know if you're going to be in the Austin area; I'd be happy to try to help with your questions.

Hi. I have just started to learn some theory, and I'm getting into things like Primary and Major Intervals, and things to that nature. My question is, how do you put all this to work on your bass guitar?

To ROCCO: I don't know anything to help you there, maybe some other folks here?...Good luck finding your Mexican bass. To RYAN: Hello again. Thanks for the word on the live "Cliffs." I haven't used a pick on a recording in a long time. The last time I remember was on Robben Ford's "Talk To Your Daughter" album. During one of the recording days, I was suffering from over-use syndrome in my plucking hand and had to use a pick on one or two songs. The attack you hear on the live recording may have been caused by some EQ added on the house mix (hate when that happens!) See ya in Austin. To POURIA: Is that IRAN, like in IRAN? There's a first for this website! Wish I had a jazz/blues catalog to send you, my friend. Can anyone recommend a good jazz/blues website to this fellow? To JAY: I like the Sadowsky preamp a lot, I must say. I've always been a "passive guy," you know, P-basses, Jazz basses, and my signature instrument of course, is passive. But I like what the Sadowsky preamp adds to the sound of the bass. My intention in designing the RB-5 was to FIRST get a good sounding passive instrument--something I felt did't exist in the 5-string market, the individual player can make his/her own outboard choices from that point forward. re: string height, I have mine set pretty low. G-5/64", D-5/64", A-5/64", E-6/64" B-7/64". If the neck's really fine tuned and straight, I might even finesse the tolerances down another 64th if I can get away with it. What's important is the truss rod setting: just a little bit of relief. Too much relief: it's too hard to play. But if the necks too straight, the strings lie on the fret(s) BEHIND the fretted note, causing the tapped note not to sound very well at all. When you hold down a note, you should have relief on BOTH side of the fretted note. That's the key. Hope to see you sometime. When the next tour comes up, you'll hear about it here. Cheers, RB

Roscoe - Thanks for the response. You're right about the dates at Rockefeller's. Two questions. First, what are your thoughts/comments regarding the Sadowsky pre-amp you use in your pedal setup? A friend is giving me one for being in his wedding, and I wondered what it does for your sound? I've heard that it "boosts without coloring" the sound. Second, regarding the "organ sound", how low is your bass action set? As you noted on your video, the action needs to be just right to get the right sound. My 4-string jazz was set with low action, but I found that my sound was not as full due to the proximity to the pickups. It sounds much better with the action set at Fender specs, but tapping gets hard on the fingers. Just curious. By the way, when are you going to be touring in the northeast? I'd love to get to a show sometime.
